Chihuahuas are small toy dogs that appeared in the New World long ago. It is believed that the breed was developed in China and then Spanish merchants introduced it to America. For Aztecs it was a sort of a sacred dog. The power of leading the dead into the underworld was attributed to them and thus, almost every family kept the Chihuahua to sacrifice it when a member of the family passed away.
Toltecs used to breed the Techichi, an ancient replica of the Chihuahua we know today. After Aztecs conquered this ancient people and then were subdued themselves the Techichi's trace was lost. The dog appeared in Mexico only in 1850. This tiny living being was named after the state of Chihuahua and then moved to the United States of America.
"The rhumba king", Xavier Cugat, contributed much to the distribution of the breed since he liked his Chihuahua to accompany him always, thus making it conspicuous to the public how much he treasured his pet. It was the best "reference" one could think of to promote the breed. Since then the Chihuahua is adored by millions of people in the US as well as all over the world. Chihuahuas - Pictures - Description
The Chihuahua is a toy dog. It weighs about 6-9 pounds and sometimes more. According to the AKC standard, however, dogs weighing more than 6 pounds are disqualified. As for the myth about the Tea-Cup Chihuahua, the standard makes it clear that there is no distinction made within the breed, except that the Chihuahua can be smooth-coats and long-coats. Both of them occurring in the litter is a common thing. Note, that on the land of Albion, they are considered two different breeds.
Ears are naturally erect, moving to the side at about 45 degrees when something captures the dog's attention. They are large and according to the standard there should be a considerable width between them. Eyes are large as well, with a great deal of tears scattering all around you when it shakes the head. Chihuahuas' eyes are wide open, set a bit apart. Life Span: The average life span is 15 years. Some Chihuahuas live up to 20 years. Chihuahuas - Pictures - Temperament
The Chihuahua is an alert devoted pet craving for attention and love. It likes resting upon your lap or just lying beside you in the evening. Exploring the space near-by is peculiar to this little thing. It is a perfect breed for city dwellers since you would not have to spend much time walking your pet. Chihuahuas are friendly with children and other pets.
