According to the AKC standard, these dogs can vary in size from 2 to 6 pounds; individuals that are larger or smaller are disqualified. In the USA two variants of coat type are considered to be varieties of the breed, but in the UK they are separate breeds. These dogs are characterized by a well-rounded skull and a tiny muzzle with large eyes and ears. The rib-cage of these dogs is rounded and may be barrel-shaped; the legs are stick-like with dainty feet. The tail is long and carried in a loop.
