Chihuahuas are healthy and long-lived, and their life span is 14-16 years on the average. These dogs are active and lucid-minded, and despite their small size, they appreciate rigorous activity. They can do okay without a yard but should not be locked alone in the house. Chihuahuas have sturdy bodies with lean shoulders and straight limbs. The gait is smooth and firm, with a good reach in the front and a substantial drive in the rear. As speed increases, the front and the hind legs tend to converge toward the central line on gravity.

The Chihuahua breed takes its name from the Mexican state. It is the smallest of the AKC registered breeds. A dog of this breed weighs about two-to-six pounds. The body of the Chihuahua is slightly longer than it is tall. Chihuahuas have a rounded skull, a moderately short muzzle, large dark eyes, and large ears. The teeth are arranged in a level or scissors bite. Chihuahuas may be smooth-coated or long coated. Either type of the dog’s coat can be any solid color or can be marked with color on a white background.
