The standard size for the breed is 6-9 inches high at the shoulders. These animals have an apple-shaped head with large ears, luminous dark eyes and a pointed muzzle. The chest is deep and broad, but not like in Bulldogs. The limbs are straight and compact, the feet being neat and dainty. The tail is usually carried over the back. These canines come in various colors, and there are smooth-coated and long-coated canines. Somehow, long-coated are more kind-hearted and less peevish than smooth-coated animals. Smooth-coats are popular in Great Britain, and long-coats are renowned in America.

Very small puppies are actually premature and are not fully developed. They are conceived some time later than the first puppies, but are born together with them. Such dogs are very weak and have health defects; they may die even with the best care. If a kennel claims that it breeds only so-called teacup type of the breed, it cannot be trusted, because the main aim of such kennels is to make money selling very small puppies.
